Sonic the Hedgehog Story Comic is a three-volume promotional comic for Sonic the Hedgehog distributed alongside the Japanese magazine Mega Drive Fan. The comic tells the story of the first game, with Sonic traversing across South Island and rescuing his animal friends from Dr. Eggman. As the comic was created before the final release of the game, there is a number of references to old concepts and prototype material. Sonic is the lead singer of a band, travels through Sparkling Zone and Clockwork Zone, and the final issue details how Sonic became the mascot of a deceased pilot.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a manga series that was serialized in Shogakukan's Study Magazines for primary school children and Bessatsu CoroCoro Comic Special. It was published in Japan between 1992 and 1994. It is very loosely based upon the video game series, with an original story concept developed by Kenji Terada. Sega of Japan's marketing department devised the strategy get Sonic manga published by Shogakukan, in order to appeal to primary school children. The Sega of Japan design team was involved in the creation of the characters. He drops out of high school during his second year and lives a hoodlum's life with Tenma (his only friend) and Saeko, his sister who raised him for nine years after their mother's death. Hearing about a large sum of money held by a loan shark, Tatsuya and several other hoodlums break-in at night. Tatsuya defeats Naoki, not knowing he killed him. After Toda's death, Tatsuya receives an ultimatum from a member of his gang: win ten consecutive fights or be arrested. Tatsuya agrees, and as he fights underground he bonds with trainer Kudoh Saki and physician Amamiya Taizan. Based on the PSP game.

There are some people that have descended from Hastur's ancient bloodline, one of which is the young Peruvian sorceress, Annet Myer. With some assistance from Earnest Evans, Annet attempts to stop the cult from resurrecting Hastur using the very spells of this bloodline. Unfortunately the manga was never finished, and ends on a cliffhanger.

A young boy with no recollection of most of his life beyond his name and his mission runs into a group of hunters named Neithird and Duolos…" The comic Third was created by Phantasy Star IV character designer, Yoshibon, for the Sega Players Enjoy Club in 1990. This work was published after Phantasy Star II and was used as the basis for creating Phantasy Star IV, a video game released in 1993. The comic was never finished since the fan club magazine was discontinued; the final chapter ends abruptly after a swarm of robot soldiers attempt to surprise the trio at Third's house.
